Who is Mark

My name is Mark Wood and I am a woodworker located in Johnstown, NY.  I mix contemporary design with Adirondack tradition to create aesthetically pleasing: lamps, lighting fixtures, furniture, and abstract sculpture made from wood, sticks, various natural materials, stained glass, and sometimes found objects.

Artist Statement:

Nature is such a powerful and important thing; it's why we are here.
All around the world and into the cosmos an incomprehensible amount of things are happening; lifecycles, weather, heartbeats, growth, decay,
With rapidly advancing technologies and modern living amenities, we are removed from these things and it is increasingly easier to be distracted or forget that these things exist. I am influenced by sacred geometry and natural mathematical patterns such as the Fibonacci sequence which arise vastly through nature. I think it’s transcendent, in a world that is so chaotic, nature proves itself to be so consistent. Frank Lloyd Wright said, “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature, it will
never fail you.” In Shinto, there are Kami which are of nature and are
considered exemplary of what humanity should strive towards. Elbert
Hubbard and the Roycrofters said their work was the product of their;
head heart and hands, which to me is purely organic.

Since an early age, I've carried two things with me: the unquenchable need to create and work on things with my hands,  and the strong attraction to trees and natural materials.

My influences are vast, I tend to gravitate toward and absorb the things that naturally interest me.  I am drawn to the aesthetics, techniques, and conceptual ideas of the Victorian era, Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Japanese Edo Period woodworking and architecture, Adirondack stick furniture, and Great Camp architecture. And last but not least, Nature in so many different ways is a constant driving influence.

To me, “Rustic” is thoughtful of nature and the materials derived from it.  I view wood and other various natural materials as a palette to create with.  I use rustic materials in ways inspired by traditional Adirondack furniture and architecture. I scavange, harvest, process, kiln dry all my own rustic materials. I appreciate this Adirondack culture, I have learned the nuances and aim to carry on this tradition in my work. I feel craftsmanship is important, especially now when everything is disposable. My pieces are heirloom quality,

I create truly unique pieces that will embellish your atmosphere and stand the test of time.
